President’s Message

It has been a busy few weeks since my last message. Here is a rundown of what’s going on within the Sierra Chapter.

Monthly Board of Directors and General Monthly Membership Meeting. On Wednesday, October 21st we held our first virtual chapter meeting via Microsoft Teams.

Those that had a chance to attend the  meeting were treated to an excellent presentation by high school robotics team ”Citrus Circuits #1678” based in Davis  The presentation was led by team captain Livy Taylor and hardware design lead Nathan McAllister.

Scholarship season is upon us once again!

Each year the Sierra Chapter supports several key scholarship programs. “The Tim Fleming Memorial Scholarship” (T.F.M.S.).  Marco Palilla, Sierra Chapter Director, has announced a couple of changes in the scholarship program this year; (1) The dollar amount of the individual scholarships has been increased from $2000 to $5,000 each; (2) The scholarship foundation  intends to award not one, but two $5000 scholarships this year, and (3) The foundation has added  “graduate” students along with Junior and Senior Civil Engineering/Transportation majors at California State University Sacramento, University of California Davis and University of Pacific.  Applications due December 11, 2020.  Click here for forms and more information.

In addition, the chapter has been a contributor to the scholarship sponsored by the San Joaquin Engineers Council (SJEC). On October 29th I was invited to attend their board meeting as a representative of our Chapter to present our donation.

SJEC sponsors many programs and events such as “MathCounts” and “TOPS” (Teaching Opportunities for Partners in Science).   Applications will be available online in October at click here and are due January 11, 2021.

Our next Sierra Chapter meeting will be held virtually on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at 12:00PM.  We will be using the Microsoft Teams platform, so look for your email invitation shortly.

Tyler Munzing, ACEC Director of Government Affairs will be joining us to provide an update on the elections and also the status of Government Code 1090.

The board has chosen a topic for this month’s presentation that I know is something we are all dealing with – Social Media, Virtual Meetings and other forms of digital interaction.   Our presenter will be Kit Powis, WSP, west region director of communication & public involvement.  Kit will help us understand how to navigate and excel at communicating through this technology.

Look forward to seeing everyone soon.
