Past Presidents and Tim Fleming Memorial Scholarship Award Ceremony – February Dinner Meeting Recap

Our 11th Annual Past President’s Dinner Meeting and Tim Fleming Memorial Scholarship Award Ceremony was another excellent event celebrating the Sierra Chapter. On February 23rd, your legendary Past Presidents were joined by an assortment of members and guests including our Guest Speaker, ACEC-CA Government Affairs Director Tyler Munzing (who pinch-hit for President Miranda Patton when her flight was cancelled).

Although the parade of Past Presidents was impressive (see the photo at the end of this article), the highlight for me was introducing the11th annual winners of the Tim Fleming Memorial Scholarship, Jasmine Randhawa and Sarah Grajdura. Each winner received a $5,000 check from the scholarship fund which is administered by the California Transportation Foundation (CTF). Our scholarship review team of Ryan Fleming and Susan Fleming-Bentley received 11 applications this year and narrowed it down to Jasmine and Sarah.

Jasmine is currently a third year undergraduate student at UOP and planning to graduate in May 2023 with her BS in Civil Engineering. After graduating she plans to complete her Master’s Degree in 2024 and work full time in the transportation sector. Jasmine is currently doing her Co-Op at Caltrans, Division of Rail and Mass Transportation. She also served as Secretary of the UOP ASCE Student Chapter.

Sarah is a 5th year PhD student at UC Davis and graduating this month (March 2022). She is currently working on two projects: 1) modeling used vehicle exports to developing countries and 2) modeling changes in California transportation patterns under different future COVID scenarios. Sarah has accepted a post-doctoral scholar position at UC Davis, Energy Futures program at the Institute of Transportation Studies. She will be working on projects related to modeling future transportation and energy systems in the US and internationally, including a range of topics related to new vehicle technologies, new fuels, and transportation system dynamics.

Congratulations again to both of this year’s winners!

Remembering Tim Fleming’s legacy in this way is absolutely a win-win for our Chapter and the schools in our area. In addition, the Sierra Chapter Board approved another $5,000 donation to the scholarship which is now an endowed scholarship!

Finally, Past Presidents joined us from as far back as 1994, Paul Enneking, up through and including our 2020-2021 Past President, Jerry Jones.  Thanks again to all the Past Presidents, Tyler Munzing, Ryan Fleming and Susan Fleming-Bentley, and our scholarship winners for making this another great Sierra Chapter event!
