President’s Message

Is it possible to close out a year at the helm of the Sierra Chapter Board with an inspiring and captivating President’s message? Perhaps, but frankly it is a pretty big challenge to recap the year and thank everyone and keep your attention at the same time. To do so means I must challenge you with a game of ACEC Trivia. Here goes! Careful though, if you get at least half of them correct you are definitely Director material:

  1. Name your incoming President. He was instrumental in keeping me on task as the V.P. and was always there for me to bounce ideas off of and discuss strategic issues.
  2. Did you know that one of the board members faithfully brings the audiovisual equipment to each dinner meeting without question? Can you name him?
  3. What Engineering Council inspired me to write about them in my March message?
  4. Kelly Birkes with Rick Engineering has attended this engineering fair representing the Sierra Chapter for at least three years that I know of. What is the name of the fair?
  5. Name two components of the upcoming ACEC-CA Strategic Plan.
  6. Name the two folks who did an awesome job keeping track of the chapter finances.
  7. What did I say in my first message of the year as to why the year was going to have ”a lot of excitement and work ahead of us . . ?”
  8. Do you remember what I said needed reform in the February newsletter?
  9. Which one of our current State Directors is credited with the recent resurgence of our popular Past President’s Dinner (Bob LoRusso, Marco Palilla, Ed Henderson, or Steve Greenfield)?
  10. Who spent a little less time with their husband and father this past year while he was fulfilling his ACEC duties?

It has been a great year serving as your chapter President. I am grateful to have had the opportunity. Thank you to all for your support. I hope you can make it to our summer social where we will leave business aside for an evening of wine tasting and fun!

  1. Ted Hopkins, Shannon & Wilson – The Chapter is in good hands!
  2. Harvey Oslick, RBF
  3. The San Joaquin Engineering Council organized a great dinner event in February, where they provided over $10,000 in scholarships.
  4. Sacramento Engineering and Science Fair.
  5. A) Develop policy platforms on infrastructure funding for water, transportation, and redevelopment. B) Increase Public Relations to promote how Engineers and Surveyors affect our daily lives.
  6. Debbie LoCicero, ACEC Recording Secretary; Ryan O’Keefe, Morton & Pitalo
  7. 2012 was an election year! We certainly did have some excitement and challenges locally endorsing an Assembly candidate and statewide endorsing a key proposition.
  8. CEQA! Unfortunately, not much meat has been put on those bones yet, but ACEC continues to track its progress and is working behind the scenes to affect change.
  9. Marco Palilla with HDR. I threw this question in so I could give Marco kudos because he is one of the backbone members of our chapter. He is so dedicated to ACEC and the Sierra Chapter that he was always ready to step in when asked (or not asked!), is a wealth of Chapter history, and was my inspiration for tackling the President role this year.
  10. There are many answers to this, but for me it was my awesome wife Teri, and my three kids. They are my true inspiration and support group. Teri never complains about my nights out at various meetings including ACEC. I am very lucky to have them as my answer to this question!
