Civil Works and Military Program Trends and Key Projects Eric Nagy, USACE, Chief of Design Branch, November Meeting Recap

eric_nagyMr. Nagy, US Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District Chief of Design Branch presented Civil Works and Military Program Trends and Key Projects at our November meeting.   The presentation included an overview of the District’s history, geographic area of responsibility and internal organization.  The Design Branch is staffed by approximately 120 people within the Engineering Division overall staff of about 340.  Civil Works accounts for nearly $150 million of the $930 million District budget in fiscal year 2011 and will likely be significantly reduced in 2012.

After reviewed the financial issues, Mr. Nagy highlighted some of the major Design Branch projects.  The major projects presented included:

  • Implementation of an auxiliary spillway at Folsom Lake which addresses dam safety and flood risk reduction objectives,
  • The American River Common Features Project which includes about 90 miles of levee in and around the City of Sacramento to correct various deficiencies,
  • Repair of erosion on levees as authorized as part of the Sacramento River Flood Control Project,
  • The design-build Utah Data Center project to detect and protect US internet infrastructure against domestic and foreign cyber attacks, and
  • The design-bid-build Joint Space Operations Center to detect and monitor space debris that will include four facilities under one roof that is designed for future expansion.
